The Dental Home is intended to provide a place
other than the Emergency Room for parents.
You can make the first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive. If old enough, your child should be informed of the visit and told that the dentist and their staff will explain all procedures and answer any questions. The less to-do concerning the visit, the better.
It is best if you refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as "needle", "shot", "pull", "drill" or "hurt". The office makes a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to the child.
As with most offices that specialize in dentistry for kids, we will ask that you remain in the reception area if your child has reached school age. We must develop a trusting relationship with you and your child in order to deliver the best care possible. Frequently this relationship is not achieved if the child's focus is on the parent rather than on the dental experience. More times than not, when the parent is out of sight, the child will become engrossed in all the activity and visual stimulation and, before they know it, they are done and on their way home.
If your child is pre-school age, we will allow one parent to accompany the child on the initial visit. After the first visit, you should send them back on their own. That gives them a great sense of accomplishment and independence.
